  • OVERVIEW

PGCS are appointed to provide a full Structural Consultancy service over three phases:

    Phase One
    Sports hall and Teaching Block
    Phase Two
    Dining facilities and Science Block
    Phase Three
Staff Rooms, Reception and further Classrooms

Phase One is currently under construction, Phases Two and Three are due to commence on site towards the end of 2009.

Forms of construction are necessarily diverse to suit the various uses of the buildings.

  • The structural solution adopted for the sports hall includes the construction of steel portal frames spanning a distance of approximately twenty metres to create a column free environment. Whereas the teaching block is constructed from traditional load bearing masonry walls and precast concrete floors.

Interesting aspects of the sports hall include deep drainage and terraced foundations due to the sloping nature of the site, high level offset masonry walls, large span steel truss to one end to allow a ten metre stage opening to be formed whilst allowing to support a future concrete floor.

A number of challenges associated with the teaching block were overcome to meet the terms of the brief. These included tying the superstructure together to satisfy disproportionate collapse criteria, large span floors, a large span timber lightweight roof structure and keeping the foundations as simple as possible to minimize costs.
