OVERVIEW
The client brief was to build a single storey extension to its current maternity department with capacity to accommodate the addition of a second storey in the future.
The design solution comprised a steelwork frame with a brickwork envelope to support the precast concrete floor slabs at current roof level, which will become the future first floor. Steelwork columns were taken through the roof construction and capped/drilled to receive the future steelwork columns. The frame was braced using steel flats located within the cavity walls.
Ground conditions were challenging with clay over sands and gravels but were overcome with shallow pad and ground beam foundations. Abutting the existing hospital building required the use of cantilevered foundations to support the innermost columns.
-
The depth of ground beam adjacent to the existing building was dictated by matching up to the existing sub-structure.
